I am busy working at Minerva's for about 7 hours a day four days a week for the time being. I am also starting a class to get a different perspective on painting techniques at the New York Academy of Art. This is the school that I have the most connections to here as far as training goes. I have been taking classes from time to time here for the last 12 years. I have a great number of friends who have studied here and also teach here. The school teaches based upon the 19th century French academic ideas. What this means is that the training given is quite rigorous and based upon the human figure. Drawing is very important and one learns by studying the human form. The painting methods taught are also very rooted in the nearly 1000 year old tradition of oil painting.
As there are so many complexities to oil painting, it makes sense to me that one would start with what has been successful in the past. Once the fundamental concepts are understood, one can play with the concepts and methods to meet contemporary needs.

I was wondering if you'd given up on your blog!
thank you for letting me know that i'm not writing in a vacuum. I think that the work i'm doing right now is a bit repetitive for the casual observer so i'm keeping down to a minimum. i did a painting of a pear yesterday that will make an appearance once i get my camera down to the studio. thanks again for reading!!
Minerva the magazine on art and architecture, or the bookstore? Congrats on new paintings, summer in France, and everything else. I love the new direction Ann Turner.
