Minerva is the wonderful woman who runs the Spring Street Studio.
She taught drawing at Parson's School of Design for ten years before opening the Spring Studio in SoHo. For fifteen years she has presented figure-drawing sessions there open to the public seven days a week. The studio has exhibited the works of hundreds of artists, both professionals and students and has presented many events of music, dance and writing, and Body Painting based on the nervous, muscular and circulatory systems. So basically you just walk in with a pad of paper and pencil and draw a nude model for 3-4 hours. It is a great place to learn how to draw by looking at the model and by looking at other people's work.
For those 15 years, Minerva has been helping artists with all different issues surrounding what it means to be an artist. She has encouraged me since I first started drawing in her studio - I think about 10 or 11 years ago. She spent an hour yesterday telling me about different things to consider while I work on developing my own voice and work patterns. She is a generous and kind person who has really helped me in my drawing and painting. I am very indebted to her.
I am planning on spending a few weeks in her studio just drawing all day long. I want to explore drawing models in the same way as I explored painting landscapes when I was in France - total immersion. I am intending to eventually hire models in my studio to work on longer term paintings.
